Trump’s son-in-law presented slides depicting “gleaming skyscrapers rising on Gaza’s coast and the construction of entirely new cities,” requiring at least $25 billion in investment.

Rafah—the southern city Israel largely razed during the war—would be rebuilt in two to three years, Kushner said. “We said, ‘Let’s plan for catastrophic success.’ There is no ‘Plan B.’”

The Problems:

Hamas hasn’t agreed to disarm or disband. The United States has struggled to convince countries to contribute peacekeeping troops. It’s unclear who provides the billions required.

Most tellingly, Kushner himself acknowledged moving money into Gaza could be “a little risky” while calling it “amazing investment opportunities.”

At Davos—a forum where precision, evidence, and credibility matter—Trump delivered a masterclass in substituting volume for veracity.

The Greengrocer’s Choice:

Havel’s greengrocer could hang the sign (”Workers of the world, unite!”) and live within the lie. Or he could take it down and face consequences.

World leaders listening to 90 minutes of fabrications faced the same choice:

• Nod along, pretend the claims are reasonable, maintain diplomatic courtesy (live within the lie)

• Name the falsehoods publicly, fact-check in real-time, refuse to pretend (take down the sign)

Denmark chose to take down the sign. So did European Parliament. So did Greenland (”nothing about us, without us”). So did Denmark’s defense committee chair (”we’ve heard worse, still not handing over Greenland”).

They couldn’t afford to live within the lie when their sovereignty was at stake.

What Trump’s Falsehoods Proved:

Trump’s lies at Davos didn’t undermine the case for European independence and middle power cooperation.

They made it irrefutable.

When the hegemon floods the zone with untruths—when 90 minutes produces dozens of false claims, mathematical impossibilities, and fabricated meetings—middle powers can’t afford to live within the lie anymore.

They have to name reality, fact by fact.

This is why Denmark stood firm. This is why Europe coordinated. This is why the playbook worked.

You can’t build partnership on a foundation of fabrication.

The greengrocer took down the sign.

A Note to Readers:

I apologize for this essay’s length. Trump spoke for 71 minutes, then added 19 minutes of Q&A—90 minutes total. Carney spoke for 15 minutes. Macron for 25. Von der Leyen for 20.

The duration itself is the story—a performance of dominance that reveals powerlessness. I’ve tried to show why 90 minutes matters without making you endure endless analysis. If you find yourself thinking “is he still going?”—that’s what world leaders felt in that hall. The inability to stop talking is a window into the inability to think strategically.

Trump opened: “So many friends—a few enemies.” The audience laughed. Within the hour, they’d learn he wasn’t joking.

Twenty minutes of standard Trump economics (stock market records, inflation defeated, Biden terrible) preceded the main event. At minute 20:40, it arrived.

“Would You Like Me to Say a Few Words on Greenland?”

Twenty minutes into the speech, Trump arrived at the main event:

“WOULD YOU LIKE ME TO SAY A FEW WORDS ON GREENLAND? I WAS GOING TO LEAVE IT OUT OF THE SPEECH, BUT I THINK I WOULD HAVE BEEN REVIEWED VERY NEGATIVELY.”

The audience laughed nervously. They thought he was joking.

He wasn’t.

What followed was 21 minutes—longer than Carney’s entire speech, nearly as long as Macron’s—dedicated to explaining why the United States must acquire Greenland from Denmark, a NATO ally.

The Historical Revisionism (Minutes 20-25):

Trump began with World War II:

“WITHOUT US, RIGHT NOW, YOU’D ALL BE SPEAKING GERMAN AND LITTLE JAPANESE, PERHAPS. WE SAVED GREENLAND DURING WORLD WAR II. AFTER THE WAR, WE GAVE GREENLAND BACK TO DENMARK. HOW STUPID WERE WE TO DO THAT? BUT WE DID IT. BUT WE GAVE IT BACK. BUT HOW UNGRATEFUL ARE THEY NOW?”

Several things wrong here:

First, the United States never “had” Greenland to “give back.” Under a 1941 treaty, the U.S. defended Greenland during WWII but never took sovereignty. Denmark never ceded the territory.

Second, calling Denmark “ungrateful” for refusing to surrender territory they’ve governed for centuries inverts the entire concept of alliance obligations.

Third, Trump is telling a room full of European leaders that America was “stupid” for not seizing allied territory after World War II. This isn’t subtle.

The New York Times reported that several audience members “groaned” at the WWII reference.

The Security Justification (Minutes 25-30):

“GREENLAND IS IN A VERY IMPORTANT LOCATION SITTING UNDEFENDED IN A KEY STRATEGIC LOCATION BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES, RUSSIA AND CHINA. NO NATION OR GROUP OF NATIONS IS IN ANY POSITION TO BE ABLE TO SECURE GREENLAND OTHER THAN THE UNITED STATES.”

This ignores that:

• The U.S. already has a major Space Force base in Greenland (Pituffik, formerly Thule)

• Denmark is a NATO ally

• NATO’s Article 5 collective defense covers Greenland

• Eight European nations had just deployed troops to Greenland for exercises

But Trump’s worldview doesn’t recognize collective security. If you don’t own something, you can’t defend it. If you can’t defend it alone, you can’t defend it at all.

He continued:

“EVERY NATO ALLY HAS AN OBLIGATION TO BE ABLE TO DEFEND THEIR OWN TERRITORY. AND THE FACT IS, NO NATION OR GROUP OF NATIONS IS IN ANY POSITION TO BE ABLE TO SECURE GREENLAND OTHER THAN THE UNITED STATES. WE’RE A GREAT POWER.”

This is the theory: NATO allies must be able to defend their territory alone, or cede it to someone who can. Collective defense doesn’t count. Only unilateral capability matters.

Which would mean:

• Estonia should cede territory to Russia (can’t defend alone)

• Belgium should cede to France or Germany (can’t defend alone)

• Every small NATO member should surrender sovereignty to a larger neighbor

The entire logic of NATO—collective defense makes small countries secure—is rejected.

The Danish “Failure” (Minutes 30-33):

“DENMARK PROMISED $200 MILLION FOR GREENLAND DEFENSE. THEY SPENT LESS THAN 1% OF THAT AMOUNT.”

Trump used this to argue Denmark couldn’t be trusted to defend Greenland. What he didn’t mention: the U.S. controls the major military installation there. Denmark’s spending covers civilian governance and local defense needs.

But in Trump’s framework, spending equals commitment. Low spending proves Denmark doesn’t care. Therefore, America should take over.

The Development Promises (Minutes 33-37):

Trump pivoted to economic development:

“WE WANT TO DEVELOP GREENLAND. WE WANT TO MAKE IT GREAT. WE WANT TO PROTECT THE PEOPLE. WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THEY HAVE EVERYTHING THEY NEED.”

This echoed colonial language from a century ago: we’ll develop you, protect you, give you what you need. The assumption that Greenlanders can’t determine their own future runs throughout.

He added rare earth minerals, strategic position, and Chinese encroachment. All legitimate concerns. None requiring sovereignty transfer.

But Trump’s worldview only recognizes ownership. Partnership, alliance, cooperation—these are abstractions. Greenland is either ours or vulnerable.

The Threat Wrapped in Reassurance (Minutes 37-39):

Then came the moment that made the audience gasp:

“WE PROBABLY WON’T GET ANYTHING UNLESS I DECIDE TO USE EXCESSIVE STRENGTH AND FORCE WHERE WE WOULD BE, FRANKLY, UNSTOPPABLE. BUT I WON’T DO THAT, OK? I WON’T USE FORCE.”

The New York Times reported “some people audibly gasped” at this line.

He’d just told a NATO ally—in front of other NATO allies—that:

• He could take Greenland by force

• Nobody could stop him

• He’s choosing not to (for now)

• This is reassuring

The structure of the sentence itself reveals the coercion: “We won’t get anything UNLESS I use force... but I won’t do that.”

Translation: Give it to us, or force becomes necessary. I’m showing restraint. Be grateful.

The Ultimatum (Minutes 39-42):

Trump closed the Greenland section with perfect clarity:

“ALL THE UNITED STATES IS ASKING FOR IS A PLACE CALLED GREENLAND—A COLD AND POORLY LOCATED PIECE OF ICE THAT CAN PLAY A VITAL ROLE IN WORLD PEACE AND WORLD PROTECTION. IT’S A VERY SMALL ASK.”

Greenland: population 57,000, self-governing for decades, integral to Danish identity. Reduced to a “piece of ice.”

Then the choice:

“THEY HAVE A CHOICE. YOU CAN SAY YES, AND WE WILL BE VERY APPRECIATIVE. OR, YOU CAN SAY NO, AND WE WILL REMEMBER.”

The Times reported the auditorium went silent.

This wasn’t negotiation. This was ultimatum. “We will remember” isn’t diplomatic language—it’s threat language. Comply, or face consequences unspecified but clearly negative.

Twenty-one minutes. Longer than most leaders’ entire speeches. All to explain why a NATO ally should surrender territory to the United States or face America’s displeasure.

Carney had warned the day before: “The powerful have their power. But we have something too—the capacity to stop pretending, to name reality.”

Trump just named the reality Carney warned about: territorial demands backed by threat of force, alliance obligations subordinated to American interests, sovereignty conditional on American approval.

To be clear: Arctic security concerns about Chinese and Russian presence are legitimate strategic issues. NATO allies and defense analysts have raised genuine questions about critical minerals access, shipping routes, and military positioning. Trump’s mistake isn’t identifying the problem—it’s proposing territorial acquisition through coercion as the solution. This is precisely what Mark Carney warned about in his Davos speech: confusing great-power rivalry with outright territorial conquest.

Punching Canada, Doubting NATO

Mid-Greenland section, Trump took a detour to attack Mark Carney directly. The timing matters—Carney’s speech the day before had been the most conceptually sophisticated response to Trump’s Greenland threats.

“I WATCHED YOUR PRIME MINISTER YESTERDAY. WAS NOT SO GRATEFUL. CANADA. CANADA LIVES BECAUSE OF THE UNITED STATES. REMEMBER THAT, MARK, THE NEXT TIME YOU MAKE YOUR STATEMENTS.”

The Times reported “some gasps” from the audience.

Carney had given a 15-minute speech invoking Václav Havel’s greengrocer, calling for middle power solidarity, declaring “if you’re not at the table, you’re on the menu,” and announcing Canada’s path forward: “We choose it openly and confidently, and it is a path wide open to any country willing to take it with us.”

Trump’s response: Canada owes its existence to American protection.

The contrast couldn’t be sharper:

• Carney’s framework: Sovereignty through collective action and shared values

• Trump’s framework: Subordination and existential dependence

This wasn’t off-the-cuff. Trump specifically named Carney, referenced the previous day’s speech, and delivered a public threat: “Remember that, Mark.”

Then he pivoted to NATO itself:

“NATO IS TREATED—THE UNITED STATES IS TREATED VERY UNFAIRLY BY NATO. WE PAY ALMOST 100% OF THE COST. WE GIVE SO MUCH AND WE GET SO LITTLE IN RETURN.”

This fundamentally misunderstands NATO. The U.S. doesn’t “pay for NATO.” Each country pays for its own military. The U.S. has a large military for U.S. strategic interests. NATO gives America forward defense, 31 allies, Article 5 coverage, and geopolitical alignment.

But Trump sees it transactionally:

“WHAT DOES THE UNITED STATES GET OUT OF ALL OF THIS WORK THAT WE DO AND ALL OF THIS MONEY WE SPEND OTHER THAN DEATH, DESTRUCTION, AND MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF CASH GOING TO PEOPLE WHO DON’T APPRECIATE WHAT WE DO?”

“What do we get?” The question reveals everything. Trump doesn’t understand why America benefits from having 31 allies. He sees protection as a service America provides, not a mutual benefit.

Then the bombshell:

“WE WILL BE THERE FOR THEM 100%, BUT I’M NOT SURE THAT THEY WOULD BE THERE FOR US. I’M NOT SURE. I KNOW WE WOULD BE THERE FOR THEM. I’M NOT SURE THEY WOULD BE THERE FOR US.”

The Times noted this “prompted some in the audience to gasp.”

He’s questioning whether Article 5 works—whether NATO allies would actually defend the United States if attacked.

The historical record is clear: Article 5 has been invoked exactly once in NATO’s 75-year history. After 9/11. By the United States. NATO allies responded:

• AWACS flights over America

• Naval patrols in the Mediterranean

• Combat troops to Afghanistan

• Intelligence sharing

• Billions in support

But Trump either doesn’t know this or doesn’t care.

Then he connected it to Greenland:

“THEY ARE NOT THERE FOR US ON THIS. OUR STOCK MARKET TOOK THE FIRST DIP YESTERDAY BECAUSE OF ICELAND.”

The Island He Couldn’t Remember

Trump said “Iceland” when he meant “Greenland” at least four separate times during the speech:

“I’m helping Europe, I am helping NATO, and until the last few days when I told them about Iceland, they loved me.”

“The problem with NATO is that we’ll be there for them 100 percent, but I’m not sure they’d be there for us. They’re not there for us on Iceland, that I can tell you.”

“Our stock market took the first dip yesterday because of Iceland. So Iceland has already cost us a lot of money.”

Every instance was wrong. The market dropped over Greenland tensions. NATO allies were resisting demands over Greenland. The territorial acquisition he was pursuing was Greenland.

He’d made the same error the day before at the White House: “As an example, Iceland, without tariffs, they wouldn’t even be talking to us about it.”

When reporters noted the confusion, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt denied he’d misspoken: “No he didn’t. His written remarks referred to Greenland as a ‘piece of ice’ because that’s what it is.”

The denial was demonstrably false. Video showed Trump verbally saying “Iceland” when discussing stock market drops and NATO solidarity. His written remarks calling Greenland “a piece of ice” had nothing to do with him repeatedly saying the wrong country’s name.

The man demanding “immediate negotiations” to seize territory, threatening America’s oldest allies, risking NATO’s stability—couldn’t keep straight which island he was trying to acquire.

His logic: NATO allies opposing his Greenland acquisition proves they won’t defend America. Supporting Denmark’s sovereignty equals abandoning the alliance.

In Trump’s framework:

• If allies don’t support American territorial expansion, they’re disloyal

• If they defend a fellow NATO member’s sovereignty, they’re betraying America

• Alliance solidarity means siding with America against other alliance members

This is the exact inversion of collective defense.

The market dropped 1.8-2.4% because allies refused to support his territorial demands. Trump sees this as proof NATO is broken. He’s measuring alliance solidarity by whether allies help him acquire territory from another ally.

Ukraine as Theater, Europe as Failed

The Ukraine “Bloodbath”:

Trump’s Ukraine section wasn’t about strategy or peace terms. It was graphic theater designed to justify disengagement:

“IT’S A BLOODBATH. IT’S HORRIBLE WHAT’S HAPPENING. THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE A WEEK—THOUSANDS—ARE BEING KILLED. DRONE WARFARE. THE DRONES ARE KILLING THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE A WEEK.”

Then specific numbers:

“RUSSIA IS LOSING 31,000 A MONTH. UKRAINE IS LOSING NUMBERS THAT THEY DON’T WANT TO TALK ABOUT, BUT THEY’RE LOSING A LOT OF PEOPLE.”

The casualty figures serve a purpose: make the war seem unwinnable and horrific enough that any deal—even a bad one—looks merciful.

He added a bizarre personal aside about Zelensky:

“WHEN I FIRST MET HIM, HE WAS LIKE DADDY. ‘DADDY, DADDY, I NEED THIS, I NEED THAT.’ AND THEN WHEN I SAID ‘NO,’ HE BECAME A TERRIBLE HUMAN BEING.”

This is the President of the United States describing an allied leader whose country is fighting a Russian invasion.

The underlying message: Ukraine’s resistance is futile, casualties are mounting, Zelensky is difficult, so America should push for any settlement and move on.

Contrast this with von der Leyen’s speech the previous day, where she announced €890 billion for European rearmament and declared unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty.

Europe “Not Heading in the Right Direction”:

“I LOVE EUROPE AND I WANT TO SEE EUROPE GO GOOD, BUT IT’S NOT HEADING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. CERTAIN PLACES IN EUROPE ARE NOT EVEN RECOGNIZABLE, AND NOT IN A POSITIVE WAY.”

The not-so-subtle reference to migration, followed by:

“EUROPE HAS BEEN TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF. EUROPE DOESN’T KNOW WHAT IT’S DOING. THEY’VE MADE TERRIBLE ENERGY DECISIONS. THEY’VE MADE TERRIBLE IMMIGRATION DECISIONS.”

Then the specific attack on Germany:

“THEY’VE CLOSED ALL THEIR NUCLEAR PLANTS. THEY’RE USING SOLAR AND WIND. THEY DON’T HAVE ENOUGH ENERGY. THEIR PRICES ARE THROUGH THE ROOF.”

Some of this is accurate (Germany did phase out nuclear). But Trump’s point isn’t energy policy analysis—it’s establishing European incompetence as contrast to American wisdom.

The audience that included European Commission President von der Leyen, French President Macron, German Chancellor Merz, and dozens of other European leaders sat silently through this assessment that their continent is failing.

This moment perfectly illustrates Carney’s point about the ‘rupture’ in the international order. Trump praising Xi while threatening Denmark isn’t diplomatic nuance—it’s a declaration that authoritarian territorial ambition is acceptable when practiced by sufficiently powerful nations. The greengrocer doesn’t just admire strength; he admires those who’ve mastered his technique.

The Switzerland Story: A Case Study in Transactional Power

Around minute 55, Trump told a story that crystallized his entire worldview. He was speaking in Switzerland, to a Swiss audience, at a Swiss-hosted forum. What followed was either remarkably tone-deaf or deliberately insulting:

“SWITZERLAND. BEAUTIFUL SWITZERLAND. THEY HAD A $41 BILLION DEFICIT WITH THE UNITED STATES. I CALLED THEIR PRESIDENT—ACTUALLY THE LEADER, THEY DON’T CALL IT PRESIDENT—AND I SAID, ‘YOU KNOW YOU HAVE A $41 BILLION DEFICIT WITH US?’”

He continued:

“AND SHE SAID, ‘OH, REALLY?’ I SAID, ‘YEAH, $41 BILLION.’ AND I TOLD HER, ‘WE’RE GOING TO PUT A 30% TARIFF ON YOU.’ AND SHE SAID, ‘BUT WE’VE BEEN SUCH GOOD PARTNERS.’ AND I SAID, ‘I DON’T CARE. 30%.’ AND YOU KNOW WHAT? SHE RUBBED ME THE WRONG WAY.”

The audience, according to Times reporters, “gasped” at this.

Trump then escalated the story:

“SO I RAISED IT TO 39%. AND THEN I GOT A CALL FROM ROLEX. ROLEX CALLED ME. THEY SAID, ‘SIR, WE’D LIKE TO MEET WITH YOU.’ AND I REALIZED—THE UNITED STATES IS KEEPING THE WHOLE WORLD AFLOAT.”

Then the kicker:

“THEY’RE ONLY GOOD BECAUSE OF US. WITHOUT US, IT’S NOT SWITZERLAND ANYMORE.”

More gasps from the audience, per the Times.

Let’s unpack this story:

First, Trump raised tariffs from 30% to 39% because the Swiss president “rubbed me the wrong way.” Policy based on personal pique.

Second, he claims Rolex—a private company—”called” to negotiate national trade policy, which would be extraordinary if true.

Third, the conclusion: “They’re only good because of us. Without us, it’s not Switzerland anymore.”

This is Trump telling Switzerland, in Switzerland, to Swiss leaders and business executives, that their country exists only because America allows it.

The pattern:

• Identify bilateral deficit

• Threaten massive tariffs

• Personalize the negotiation

• Claim total leverage

• Assert American indispensability

What it reveals:

This wasn’t a story about successful negotiation. It was a story about coercion based on personal irritation, wrapped in the belief that American economic power makes every other country’s success contingent on American approval.

And Trump told it at Davos, in Switzerland, to demonstrate American dominance.

The Swiss delegation’s reaction wasn’t reported, but the broader audience reaction was clear: this is exactly what Carney, Macron, and von der Leyen had warned about.

The Attacks: Somalia and Macron

Somalia and Ilhan Omar:

Around minute 60, Trump pivoted to an extended attack on Somalia and Rep. Ilhan Omar:

“MINNESOTA. $19 BILLION IN FRAUD. PEOPLE FROM SOMALIA—LOW IQ PEOPLE—CAME TO THE UNITED STATES, WENT TO MINNEAPOLIS, DEFRAUDED THE UNITED STATES OF $19 BILLION, THEN WENT TO THE AIRPORT WITH SUITCASES FULL OF CASH.”

The Times reported that “some near the front of the audience groaned loudly” at the “low IQ people” comment.

He continued:

“AND WE HAVE ILHAN OMAR, WHO IS A FAKE CONGRESSPERSON. SHE CAME FROM SOMALIA. SHE’S NOT GOING TO GET AWAY WITH IT MUCH LONGER.”

Then, bizarrely, he added:

“CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT? SOMALIA. THEY TURNED OUT TO BE HIGHER IQ THAN WE THOUGHT.”

More groans from the audience.

This section achieved several things:

• Used explicitly racist language (”low IQ people”) about an entire nationality

• Threatened a sitting U.S. Congresswoman on an international stage

• Made unsubstantiated fraud claims ($19 billion)

• Demonstrated that attacks on domestic political opponents take priority even at an international forum

The Somali-American community in Minnesota—about 80,000 people—would wake up to the President of the United States calling them “low IQ” at the world’s premier economic forum.

Mocking Macron:

Earlier in the speech, Trump had taken time to mock French President Emmanuel Macron, who was in the audience:

“PRESIDENT MACRON. BEAUTIFUL SUNGLASSES YESTERDAY. DID YOU SEE THE SUNGLASSES? HE HAD A BURST BLOOD VESSEL OR SOMETHING. HE LOOKED GOOD. HE LOOKED VERY HANDSOME IN THE SUNGLASSES.”

The Times reported “some laughter in the audience” at this.

Macron had worn sunglasses due to an eye condition, which his office had explained. Trump used it as a punchline.

Then Trump told a story about forcing France to raise prescription drug prices:

“I CALLED PRESIDENT MACRON AND OTHERS. I SAID, ‘YOUR DRUG PRICES ARE TOO LOW. YOU’RE KILLING OUR PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES. YOU’RE GOING TO RAISE YOUR PRICES OR I’M PUTTING A 100% TARIFF ON YOUR WINE.’ AND YOU KNOW WHAT? THEY ALL AGREED. THREE MINUTES PER COUNTRY. THEY ALL AGREED TO RAISE THEIR PRICES.”

This is the same framework as the Switzerland story:

• Identify an “unfairness”

• Threaten tariffs on signature products

• Claim instant capitulation

• Present this as successful leadership

The idea that major countries restructured their healthcare pricing in three-minute phone calls strains credulity. But Trump presents it as evidence of American power and his negotiating genius.

Later, when the moderator asked about Macron potentially not joining the Board of Peace, Trump responded:

“I’LL PUT A 200% TARIFF ON HIS WINES AND CHAMPAGNES AND HE’LL JOIN. BUT HE DOESN’T HAVE TO JOIN.”

Threatening 200% tariffs on French wine as leverage for a Middle East peace initiative. The connection between the two: Macron defied Trump, so Trump will punish France economically until compliance.

This is governance through tariff threats, personalized punishment, and public humiliation of allies.

What It Revealed

Trump’s speech wasn’t a messaging failure. It was a perfect window into his worldview:

America as source of all prosperity: Every country’s success depends entirely on American markets and protection. Without America, “it is not Switzerland anymore.”

Alliances as protection rackets: NATO exists so America can protect Europe. The idea that America benefits from forward defense, extended deterrence, or political alignment never appears.

Subordination as natural: Canada “lives because of the United States.” Europe needs to be “grateful.” Allies who resist will be “remembered.”

Duration as dominance: Speaking for 71 minutes demonstrates you’re more important than everyone else. It’s a power move that reveals powerlessness—the need to constantly assert dominance.

But it reveals the opposite: leaders secure in their position don’t need to prove it through duration. They prove it through clarity, precision, and respect for their audience’s time.

The Times reported that Trump “was slated to speak for 45 minutes, according to the World Economic Forum website. His speech has now surpassed an hour.”

He couldn’t stop. Not because he had more to say, but because stopping would mean ceding control.

What It Revealed

Seventy-one minutes revealed five fundamental truths about Trump’s worldview:

1. America as Source of All Prosperity:

Every other nation’s success depends on American permission:

• “Without us, most of the countries don’t even work”

Carney invoked Václav Havel and offered a path forward. Macron diagnosed brutalization and refused to normalize it. Von der Leyen committed €890 billion to European capacity.

Trump demonstrated why all three were necessary.

The speech ended. Trump told Davos he’d do a “fireside chat”: “I got set up. [LAUGHTER] I did.”

He wasn’t joking. He genuinely didn’t understand why a 71-minute rambling performance might need follow-up questions.

The Q&A: 19 Minutes of Escalation

WEF President Børge Brende conducted the Q&A with the gentleness of a therapist talking someone off a ledge. No pushback. No fact-checking. Just soft questions about the economy, debt, and—inevitably—Greenland and Ukraine.

Trump used the time to escalate rather than clarify.

Praising Xi, Insulting Allies:

Asked about U.S.-China relations, Trump went further than his speech: “I’ve always had a very good relationship with President Xi... He’s an incredible man. What he’s done is amazing. He’s highly respected by everybody.”

This about the leader of America’s primary strategic competitor, at a forum where he’d just spent 71 minutes attacking America’s allies.

The “Stupid” Presidents:

Asked about Ukraine, Trump declared: “I believe they’re at a point now where they can come together and get a deal done. And if they don’t, they’re stupid. That goes for both of them. And I know they’re not stupid. But if they don’t get this done, they are stupid.”

Then he claimed he’d meet Zelensky “later today” and that the Ukrainian president “might be in the audience right now.”

Zelensky was in Kyiv dealing with Russia’s energy attacks. His adviser confirmed it immediately. Trump either didn’t know or didn’t care that the person he claimed to be meeting wasn’t in Switzerland.

Contradicting His Own Aide:

Trump declared that “59 countries” had joined the Board of Peace. Hours earlier, his own special envoy Steve Witkoff had told CNBC “north of 20, maybe 25 world leaders have already accepted.”

Either 34 countries joined in the last few hours, or Trump more than doubled the number because 25 sounded weak.

The Iran Claim:

Trump claimed that U.S. strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities represented “total obliteration.” If true, this would be one of the most significant military operations in decades. If false, it’s a dangerous fabrication about military action against a nuclear-threshold state.

The Audience Response:

Throughout the Q&A, the audience that had sat in nervous silence during the speech remained quiet. When Trump asked Marco Rubio and Susie Wiles to stand for recognition, “only some in the room applauded,” according to reporters.

The moderator wrapped after 19 minutes. Trump had spoken for 90 minutes total—six times longer than Carney, nearly four times longer than Macron or von der Leyen.

In that time, Trump:

If Carney, Macron, and von der Leyen represented the serious world’s diagnosis and response to the rupture in the international order, several other voices at Davos revealed just how impossible Trump has made the positions of those trying to navigate between American demands and their own interests.

Some walked tightropes. Some called out the complicity. Some seized the opportunity to position themselves as the alternative.

Together, they illustrated the fundamental problem: While serious leaders were having a sophisticated conversation about navigating great power rivalry, Trump was creating crises that forced everyone to choose between subordination and resistance.

Mark Rutte: The Impossible Tightrope

Perhaps no one at Davos embodied the impossible position of Trump’s allies more than NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte.

On Tuesday morning, Trump posted screenshots of private messages from Rutte that were effusive in their praise:

“Dear Donald – what you accomplished in Syria today is incredible. I will use my media engagements in Davos to highlight your work there, in Gaza, and in Ukraine. I am committed to finding a way forward on Greenland. Can’t wait to see you. Yours, Mark.”

The message was warm, personal, flattering—exactly the kind of communication Trump responds to. Rutte knows this. Everyone knows this. Trump interprets any criticism as disloyalty, so allies learned long ago to praise in private.

Hours later, Rutte appeared on a panel in Davos and delivered a very different message to the assembled leaders:

“The main issue is not Greenland now, the main issue is Ukraine. I’m a little bit worried that we might drop the ball focusing so much on these other issues. As we speak, Russian missiles and Russian drones are attacking energy infrastructure in Ukraine. We know that it is now minus 20 degrees in Kyiv, we know that Ukraine can only take care of 60 percent of its own electricity.”

Rutte noted that Russians are losing about 1,000 soldiers every day, and their monthly losses now exceed Soviet losses over ten years in Afghanistan. Yet the Kremlin continues its aggression.

“I need the European allies to keep focus on this issue, and what I’m really worrying about is that because of the peace process and because of the 90 billion [euro loan for Ukraine], we lose sight that in the meantime Ukrainians do not have enough interceptors, enough American gear they particularly need... This focus on Ukraine should be our number one priority, and then we can discuss all the issues, including Greenland.”

The Tightrope

This is what diplomacy looks like in the Trump era: private flattery, public warnings, and the desperate attempt to refocus attention on actual security crises while the American president obsesses over territorial acquisition.

The contrast between Rutte’s texts and his panel remarks reveals the impossible calculus facing NATO and European leaders:

They know Trump responds to praise and personal appeals. They know he interprets criticism as disloyalty. They know he can devastate the alliance if provoked. So they flatter in private while trying to conduct serious statecraft in public.

Rutte’s messages to Trump: “What you accomplished in Syria is incredible,” “I will highlight your work,” “I am committed to finding a way forward.”

Rutte’s message to European leaders: Focus on Ukraine. Don’t let Greenland distract from the actual war where people are dying and cities are freezing.

But here’s the fundamental problem: While Rutte is trying to keep NATO allies focused on Ukraine’s actual defense needs, Trump is posting AI-generated images of American flags planted in Greenland and threatening wine tariffs against France.

The serious conversation and the performative spectacle are happening simultaneously. Rutte is trying to navigate both. It’s unclear if that’s even possible.

Gavin Newsom: “Stop Being Complicit”

California Governor Gavin Newsom delivered some of the forum’s most combative rhetoric on Tuesday, directly challenging European leaders for their response to Trump’s Greenland demands.

“It is time to get serious, and stop being complicit,” Newsom told reporters in Davos. “It’s time to stand tall and firm, have a backbone.”

Newsom called Europe’s response to Trump’s tariff threats “pathetic” and “embarrassing,” urging European leaders to unite and stand up to the United States rather than negotiating individually or hoping compliance will buy safety.

The irony was not lost on observers: an American state governor was lecturing European heads of state about standing up to the American president.

Why Newsom’s Frustration Matters

But Newsom’s frustration reflected a reality that Carney had articulated more diplomatically: when countries negotiate bilaterally with a hegemon, they negotiate from weakness. They compete with each other to be the most accommodating. This is the performance of sovereignty while accepting subordination.

Newsom was essentially telling European leaders: Stop performing. Actually resist.

He Lifeng: China Seizes the Moment

Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng delivered his own special address on Tuesday, calling for increased cooperation and dialogue in the global economy.

“While economic globalization is not perfect,” He stated, “countries cannot completely reject it and retreat to self-isolation.”

He detailed China’s economic agenda for 2026, emphasizing domestic demand while maintaining production capacity. “China will open its door wider to the world,” he said, particularly in the services sector.

The Vacuum

The timing was notable. As Trump threatens tariffs and territorial annexation, China was positioning itself as the defender of economic integration and cooperative multilateralism—precisely the role the United States traditionally played in the post-war order.

This is the vacuum Carney warned about. When great powers abandon even the pretense of rules, when they use economic integration as a weapon rather than a mutual benefit, other powers step into the space.

China offering to “open its door wider to the world” while America threatens to close its allies’ access to American markets represents a geopolitical reversal that would have been unthinkable a decade ago.

He Lifeng wasn’t just making economic arguments. He was making a geopolitical pitch: The United States under Trump is unreliable, coercive, transactional. China, by contrast, offers stable economic partnership based on mutual benefit.

The Irony

The irony is thick. China—a country that restricts market access, subsidizes state enterprises, and uses economic leverage for political purposes—was positioning itself as the defender of free trade and globalization.

But the irony doesn’t make the pitch less effective. When the United States threatens its own allies with tariffs over Greenland, when it demands territorial acquisition as the price of alliance membership, when it uses trade as a weapon rather than a tool for mutual prosperity, China’s pitch becomes more credible.

Not because China has changed. But because America has.

The Two Conversations

What’s happening in Davos represents two fundamentally different conversations happening simultaneously:

Conversation One (The Serious One)

How do democratic middle powers navigate a world where great powers have abandoned even the pretense of rules-based order?

How do they build coalitions strong enough to resist coercion?

How do they preserve human rights, territorial integrity, and democratic values in an age of naked power politics?

Carney answered with variable geometry and the greengrocer’s sign framework.

But they maintained the fiction. They performed the rituals. They showed up to the meetings and at least pretended that international law, alliance commitments, and diplomatic norms mattered.

Trump Can’t Even Be Bothered

Trump can’t even be bothered with the performance. He’s bored of it.

He wants the Board, not the tedious work of peace. He wants the Nobel Prize, but not the patience required to earn it. He wants territorial acquisition, but not the diplomacy that might achieve it consensually. He wants European submission, but not the alliance maintenance that builds genuine partnership.

So he posts AI images, shares private texts, threatens wine tariffs, and wonders why serious people are having serious conversations about the end of an era.

The Greengrocer’s Sign

This is why Carney’s Havel framework is so powerful. For decades, countries maintained the greengrocer’s sign—participating in rituals they knew were partially false because the system provided enough public goods to make the fiction worthwhile.

Trump has made maintaining the fiction impossible. He’s not just selective about rules—he denies they exist. He’s not just exempting America from constraints—he’s using alliances as leverage for territorial acquisition.

You can’t maintain the sign in the window when the shopkeeper is demanding territorial submission as the price of not being economically destroyed.

The Cost of Boredom

When Carney warned that “if you are not at the table, you’re on the menu,” he was describing a world where Trump’s boredom with diplomatic process has real consequences.

Middle powers are being forced to choose: submit bilaterally to American coercion, or band together and risk economic retaliation.

Democratic allies who spent seven decades building the transatlantic alliance are now discussing how to sanction the United States.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz attended and said he would try to meet Trump on Wednesday. What he could possibly say to bridge the gap between Germany’s commitment to rules-based order and Trump’s “complete and total control” demands remained unclear.

European leaders were already discussing retaliatory measures:

Von der Leyen addressed the evolution in thinking about European independence:

“When I used this term, European independence, around a year ago, I was surprised by the skeptical reactions. But less than one year on, there is now a real consensus around this. The sheer speed and almost unthinkable scale of the change have driven this.”

“There’s still work to do, but we are on the cusp of a historic trade agreement. Indeed, some call it the mother of all deals. One that would create a market of 2 billion people, accounting for almost a quarter of global GDP.”

The India deal alone would create a market larger than the US-EU relationship. Combined with the Americas agreement, Europe is systematically reducing its dependence on the American market.

The conclusion: “Europe will always choose the world, and the world is ready to choose Europe.”

This is the diplomatic version of: “We don’t need you anymore.”

EU Inc: The 28th Regime

Von der Leyen announced a radical reform to remove barriers to business growth within Europe—the “28th Regime” creating “EU Inc.”:

“We will soon put forward our new 28th Regime. The ultimate aim is to create a new, truly European company structure – we call it EU Inc. – with a single and simple set of rules that will apply seamlessly across the EU.”

The specifics matter:

• Entrepreneurs can register a company in any member state within 48 hours, fully online

• The same capital regime applies across the entire EU

• Businesses can operate across member states with a single set of rules

Currently, Europe’s 450 million person market is fragmented by different regulations in each member state. Companies face “a new set of rules every time they expand into a new member state,” which “acts as a handbrake on the growth and profit potential of companies.”

EU Inc changes that fundamentally. European companies could operate across the continent as easily as American companies operate across U.S. states.

The goal: “If we get this right and if we move fast enough, this will not only help EU companies grow, but it will attract investment from across the world.”

The Savings and Investment Union

Von der Leyen outlined plans for deep capital market integration:

“We need a large-scale, deep and liquid capital market that attracts a wide range of investment. This will allow businesses to find the funding they need, including equity at lower costs, here in Europe.”

She identified a fundamental problem: Europeans have more savings than Americans, “but this saving is overinvested in bonds and sometimes in equities – but outside Europe.”

European savings are funding American and Asian growth instead of European innovation.

The solution:

• Securitization programs to mobilize capital

• Capital markets union to integrate financial markets across the EU

• Market integration covering trading, post-trading, asset management

• Supervisory framework reform to make regulation more efficient

The goal is ensuring “that capital flows where it is needed, to startups, to SMEs, to innovation, to industry.”

This is about creating a true European capital market that rivals New York and can fund European companies at scale.

Energy Independence: The Affordable Energy Action Plan

“Energy is a choke point for both companies and households,” von der Leyen stated, announcing an “affordable energy action plan.”

The diagnosis: European energy prices are too high and too volatile, creating competitive disadvantages for both businesses and households.

The solution: homegrown energies—nuclear and renewables—to bring down prices, cut dependency, and end price volatility.

Europe is “massively investing in our energy security and independence with inter-connectors” to create a true energy union.

“Homegrown, reliable, resilient and cheaper energy will drive our economic growth and secure our independence.”

This addresses one of Europe’s key vulnerabilities: dependence on imported energy. By investing heavily in nuclear and renewables, Europe is building energy independence that doesn’t require cooperation from—or vulnerability to—any external power.

Defence: From Unthinkable to Reality

Von der Leyen highlighted the transformation in European defence—perhaps the most dramatic shift in European policy in decades:

“We have done more on defence in the last year than in decades before. We have started a surge in defence spending up to €800 billion till 2030.”

This represents a fundamental break with 70 years of European security policy. For decades, Europe relied on American security guarantees and underspent on defense. That era is over.

The results are already visible:

• Tripled the market value of European defence companies since January 2022

• Created three leading European defence tech unicorns working on AI-powered battlefield intelligence and advanced drones

• Member states stepping up investment at record levels

“All of this would have been unthinkable even a few years ago,” von der Leyen noted.

She was right. Just five years ago, European leaders would have dismissed massive defense spending increases and indigenous defense tech development as politically impossible and economically unaffordable.

Trump’s unreliability as a security partner made the impossible necessary.

Ukraine: The €90 Billion Commitment

On Ukraine, von der Leyen was unequivocal:

“We all want peace for Ukraine. We recognize President Trump’s role in pushing the peace process forward and we will work very closely with the United States and we all agree that Ukraine must be in a position of strength to go to the negotiation table.”

The diplomatic language acknowledging Trump’s role was necessary. But the substance revealed Europe’s determination to act independently:

A €90 billion loan for Ukraine for 2026 and 2027 to:

• Bolster its defence on the battlefield

• Strengthen its defence capabilities for a peace agreement

• Keep basic services running

And critically: “In parallel, we decided to permanently immobilize the Russian assets, and that we reserve the right to make use of them.”

This is Europe saying: We’re funding Ukraine’s defense whether America does or not. And we’re keeping Russian assets frozen as leverage, regardless of what any peace deal might require.

The message to Russia: “Europe will always stand with Ukraine until there is a just and lasting peace.”

The message to Trump: We appreciate your engagement on Ukraine, but Europe’s support doesn’t depend on yours.

Greenland: The Heart of the Matter

Von der Leyen concluded with Greenland, calling it “an issue which cuts to the heart of” European independence, partnerships, prosperity and security.

On Arctic security, she emphasized Europe’s commitment and capabilities: “Our EU member, Finland, one of the newest NATO members, is sending its first icebreakers to the United States.”

This was a subtle rebuke: Europe has Arctic capabilities right now. We don’t need to acquire Greenland to secure the Arctic. We need to work together.

Then came the key line: “The proposed additional tariffs are a mistake, especially between long-standing allies.”

She invoked the trade deal agreed between the EU and US just last July:

“In politics, as in business, a deal is a deal. And when friends shake hands, it must mean something.”

This was von der Leyen saying: You made a deal with us six months ago. Now you’re threatening to break it over Greenland. This violates the most basic principle of international relations—agreements must mean something.

The warning was clear:

“Plunging us into a downward spiral would only aid the very adversaries we are both so committed to keeping out of the strategic landscape.”

Europe’s response would be “unflinching, united and proportional.”

The Four-Point Greenland Strategy

Von der Leyen outlined Europe’s concrete approach to the Greenland crisis:

First: Full solidarity with Greenland and Denmark – sovereignty is non-negotiable. This isn’t a position Europe will compromise on. Denmark is a member state. Greenland’s right to self-determination is absolute.

Second: Massive European investment in Greenland’s economy and infrastructure. Europe will work with Greenland and Denmark to support the local economy—showing that partnership, not coercion, is how allies support each other.

Third: Cooperation with the US on wider Arctic security, including European defense spending on icebreaker capability and other equipment vital to Arctic security. Europe is willing to invest in shared Arctic security—but through cooperation, not submission.

Fourth: Strengthened partnerships with UK, Canada, Norway, Iceland and others. Europe is building a coalition of Arctic democracies to ensure security through cooperation rather than domination.

And finally: “Europe needs to adjust to a new security architecture and the realities that we are now facing.”

Europe is preparing its own security strategy to be published later in 2026, with an upgraded Arctic strategy at its core.

The fundamental principle: “It is for sovereign people to decide their own future.”

The Blueprint for Independence

Von der Leyen’s speech provided the most comprehensive blueprint for European independence yet articulated:

Trade: Diversify away from U.S. dependence through massive free trade agreements (Americas, India, others)

Business: Create EU Inc. to make Europe a seamless market for entrepreneurs and capital

Capital: Build a true capital markets union to fund European innovation with European savings

Energy: Invest massively in homegrown nuclear and renewables to end energy dependence

Defence: Surge spending to €800B by 2030, build indigenous defense tech capability

Ukraine: Commit €90B regardless of U.S. support, maintain frozen Russian assets

Arctic: Invest in icebreakers and capabilities, build coalition of democratic partners

Each element addresses a specific vulnerability that Trump’s approach has exposed. Each element can be implemented regardless of what America does.

The Conclusion

Von der Leyen’s closing captured the entire moment:

“When I started preparing for this year’s address, security in the High North was not the main theme. But in many ways, it feeds into the wider point I started with today, that Europe must speed up its push for independence from security to economy, from defence to democracy... The point is that the world has changed permanently and we need to change with it too.”

This was diplomatic language for: Trump has forced our hand. We’re building a Europe that doesn’t need American security guarantees or American market access to survive. And we’re doing it because you’ve made it existentially necessary.

The speech had everything:

• Historical perspective (Nixon shock parallel)

• Concrete commitments (€90B for Ukraine, €800B for defense)

• Legislative proposals (EU Inc., capital markets union)

• Trade announcements (Americas agreement, India deal pending)

• Strategic vision (four-point Greenland strategy)

• Moral clarity (sovereignty is non-negotiable)

And unlike Trump’s Board of Peace—a performative structure with no substance—every element of von der Leyen’s blueprint is backed by actual money, actual legislation, actual institutional change.

This is what serious statecraft looks like. This is what happens when leaders stop maintaining the fiction and start building the alternative.

Europe is taking down the greengrocer’s sign. And it’s replacing it with something real.

French President Emmanuel Macron delivered his Davos address wearing aviator sunglasses to protect an eye affected by a burst blood vessel. The look was part defiance, part symbolism—France staring down threats with steely determination.

He opened with dark humor that drew laughter from the audience:

“It’s a time of peace, stability and predictability.”

The irony was thick. The laughter subsided as he shifted to diagnosis:

“It’s clear that we are reaching a time of instability, of imbalances, both from the security and defense point of view and the economic point of view.”

The Brutalization of the World

Macron described what he called a fundamental shift in the global order:

“A shift towards autocracy, against democracy. More violence, more than 60 wars in 2024 – an absolute record, even if I understood a few of them were fixed.”

That last line—”even if I understood a few of them were fixed”—was a pointed reference to Trump’s claim to have “stopped 8 Wars PLUS” and his assertion in the Norway text that some conflicts had been “settled.”

Macron continued:

“Conflict has become normalized, hybrid, expanding into new domains: space, digital information, cyber, trade and so on. It’s as well a shift towards a world without rules. Where international law is trampled underfoot and where the only law it seems to matter is that of the strongest. And imperial ambitions are resurfacing.”

Competition as Subordination

Without naming the United States, Macron delivered one of the sharpest indictments of Trump’s approach heard at Davos:

“Competition from the United States of America through trade agreements that undermine our export interests, demand maximum concessions and openly aim to weaken and subordinate Europe, combined with an endless accumulation of new tariffs that are fundamentally unacceptable – even more so when they are used as leverage against territorial sovereignty.”

The word “subordinate” appeared repeatedly in the speeches of both Macron and Carney—not as diplomatic euphemism but as direct description of what Trump’s tariff threats and Greenland demands represent.

Macron also addressed Chinese competition, noting “massive excess capacities and distortive practices threaten to overwhelm entire industrial and commercial sectors.”

But his central message was clear: “The answer, in order to fix this issue, is more cooperation.”

Two Approaches to Reject

Macron identified two responses Europe must avoid:

First: “To passively accept the law of the strongest, leading to vassalization and bloc politics. I think accepting the sort of new colonial approach doesn’t make sense.”

He warned that leaders who are “too complacent with such an approach will take a huge responsibility.”

Second: “To adopt a purely moral posture, limiting ourselves to commentary. That would condemn us to marginalization and powerlessness.”

Instead, Macron called for “an effective multilateralism because it serves our interests and those of all who refuse to submit to the rule of force.”

France and the G7

As France assumes the G7 presidency, Macron outlined an ambitious agenda to address global economic imbalances:

“This year, France holds the G7 presidency with a clear ambition – to restore the G7 as a forum for frank dialogue among major economies, and for collective and cooperative solutions. Trade wars, protectionist escalation, races towards overproduction will only produce losers.”

He identified the core imbalances as: American overconsumption, Chinese underconsumption and overinvestment, and European underinvestment and lack of competitiveness.

The G7’s objective, he said, would be to “demonstrate that the world’s major powers are still capable of reaching a shared diagnosis of the global economy and committing to concrete actions.”

European Response: Protection, Simplification, Investment

Macron outlined three pillars for Europe’s economic strategy:

Protection – Not Protectionism, But Realistic Defense

“Today’s Europeans are too naive. This is a unique market, open to everybody without checking level playing field.”

He noted that China and the US both protect their markets, but “Europeans are the only ones not to protect their own companies and their own markets.”

On the anti-coercion mechanism (the “trade bazooka”):

“The anti-coercion mechanism is a powerful instrument and we should not hesitate to deploy it in today’s tough environment.”

This mechanism, unofficially known as Europe’s “trade bazooka,” allows the EU to sanction individuals or institutions putting undue pressure on European nations. Macron was saying Europe should use it—for the first time ever—against the United States if necessary.

Macron called for advancing the principle of European preference: “There is a North American preference in your market. There is no European preference today. We are progressively creating it.”

Europe must strengthen its trade defense instruments, including mirror measures to enforce regulatory standards, and improve the quality of foreign direct investment targeting projects with export potential.

On China specifically: “China is welcome, but what we need is more Chinese foreign direct investments in Europe, in some key sectors, to contribute to our growth, to transfer some technologies and not just to export towards Europe.”

Simplification – Reducing Regulatory Burden

Macron emphasized the need to reduce regulations that desynchronize Europe from the rest of the world. He pointed to recent simplification efforts on automotive regulations and called for similar work on chemicals, digital, AI, and banking.

The core principle: accelerate the deepening of the single market so that Europe’s 450 million inhabitants become the true domestic market for all EU companies.

This also means ensuring technological neutrality and non-discrimination within the European Union—ending the practice of discriminating between different sources of energy, which Macron said is “counterproductive for the Europeans themselves.”

Investment and Innovation – Closing the Gap

Macron addressed the fundamental reason for the GDP per capita gap between the US and Europe:

“If there is a GDP per capita so different between the US and Europe, 65% to 70% of the explanation is due to the difference in terms of innovation. And the US was much more innovative because of public and private investment.”

Europe needs to invest much more money in critical sectors: AI, quantum computing, cleantech, defense and security. The size of the common budget must increase.

But public investment alone isn’t enough. Europe also needs more private investment.

“We do have the savings as Europeans, much more than the US, by the way. But this saving is overinvested in bonds and sometimes in equities – but outside Europe.”

The solution: securitization programs and capital markets union to invest European savings in European innovation and equity.

On Greenland

Macron addressed the crisis directly and unapologetically:

“We have decided to join a mutual exercise in Greenland without threatening anyone, but just supporting an ally and another European country, Denmark.”

This was the deployment that Trump characterized as a “provocation” and used to justify 10% tariffs on eight European nations.

Macron’s message was clear: supporting a NATO ally is not a provocation. It’s what allies do.

France’s Strengths

Macron emphasized France’s competitive advantages:

• Low-carbon electricity supply (exported 93 TWh last year, based on nuclear power)

• World-class innovation and research capabilities

• Vivid and active ecosystems in AI, quantum computing, energy transition

• High-quality infrastructure and large market with strong purchasing power

• Rule of law and predictability

On that last point, Macron made a subtle but devastating dig:

“We have a place where rule of law and predictability is still the rule of the game. And my guess is that it is largely underpriced by the market... having a place like Europe, which sometimes is too slow, for sure, and needs to be reformed for sure, but which is predictable, loyal and when, well, you know that the rule of the game is just a rule of law, it’s a good place.”

This was Macron saying: unlike America under Trump, Europe still plays by rules. That stability has value. The market hasn’t fully priced it in yet, but it will.

The Closing Lines

Macron concluded with the values statement that became one of the defining moments of Davos 2026:

“We do believe that we need more growth, we need more stability in this world. But we do prefer respect to bullies. We do prefer science to obscurantism, and we do prefer rule of law to brutality.”

These weren’t empty platitudes. Each phrase was a direct rebuke:

“We prefer respect to bullies” – Trump’s approach to allies is bullying, and Europe won’t accept it.

“We prefer science to obscurantism” – A rejection of anti-intellectualism and fact-free governance.

“We prefer rule of law to brutality” – The core distinction between democratic governance and authoritarian coercion.

The Humiliation

The timing of these remarks was particularly pointed. Hours earlier, Trump had posted screenshots of private text messages from Macron on Truth Social. The messages showed the French president trying to bridge the diplomatic gap:

“My friend, we are completely aligned on Syria. We can do great things in Iran. I do not understand what you are doing in Greenland.”

Macron had offered to arrange a G7 meeting in Paris, to have dinner with Trump, to find a path forward. He was offering cooperation, dialogue, a way to work together on shared interests while addressing disagreements.

Trump’s response was to publicly humiliate him by sharing their private diplomatic communications and then threaten France with 200% tariffs on wine and Champagne because Macron declined to join the “Board of Peace.”

This is what being “bored of peace” looks like in practice. Macron was trying to do the actual work of diplomacy—finding common ground, offering dialogue, building consensus. Trump found that boring, so he turned it into a public spectacle and an economic threat.

The Macron Doctrine

Macron’s speech articulated a clear vision:

1. Name the reality: Call it what it is—a shift toward autocracy, brutalization, a world without rules

2. Reject false choices: Neither passive acceptance nor moral posturing will work

3. Build European strength: Through protection, simplification, and investment

4. Maintain multilateralism: Effective cooperation serves European interests

5. Stand on values: Prefer respect to bullies, science to obscurantism, law to brutality

Unlike Carney’s philosophical framework or von der Leyen’s institutional blueprint, Macron offered something more visceral—a moral case for European resistance rooted in fundamental values about how nations should treat each other.

He was saying: We know you’re stronger. We know you can threaten us economically. We know you can post our private messages. We know you can mock us and humiliate us.

But we still prefer respect to bullies. And we’re building the strength to make that preference matter.

What Comes Next

As France assumes the G7 presidency, Macron will attempt to restore it “as a forum for frank dialogue among major economies.” Whether that’s possible with Trump in the White House remains to be seen.

The planned G7 meeting Macron proposed—with Ukraine, Denmark, Syria, and Russia on the sidelines—never happened. Trump leaked the private message instead.

But Macron’s three pillars—protection, simplification, investment—are already being implemented. The anti-coercion mechanism is being prepared. The European preference framework is being developed. The capital markets union is moving forward.

Europe is no longer waiting for American permission to defend its interests. It’s no longer hoping that compliance will buy safety. It’s no longer performing sovereignty while accepting subordination.

Macron made that clear: Europe prefers respect to bullies. And it’s building the economic and political strength to make that preference more than rhetoric.

On Tuesday, January 20, 2026, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stood before the assembled global elite at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, and told them it was time to remove their signs from the window.

The metaphor required explanation. And for fifteen minutes, Carney delivered what observers would call the most consequential speech on global affairs ever given by a Canadian Prime Minister—a philosophical and strategic break with seven decades of how middle powers navigated great power politics.

To understand what Carney was saying, you need to understand the greengrocer.

The Greengrocer’s Sign

Carney began not with economics or geopolitics, but with a Czech dissident’s meditation on how totalitarian systems sustain themselves.

In 1978, Václav Havel—who would later become president of Czechoslovakia—wrote an essay called “The Power of the Powerless.” It asked a simple question: How did the Communist system persist?

Carney explained Havel’s answer:

“A greengrocer places a sign in his window: ‘Workers of the world, unite!’ He doesn’t believe it, no one does, but he places the sign anyway to avoid trouble, to signal compliance, to get along. And because every shopkeeper on every street does the same, the system persists. Not through violence alone, but through the participation of ordinary people in rituals they privately know to be false.”

Havel called this “living within the lie.” The system’s power comes not from its truth, but from everyone’s willingness to perform as if it were true. Its fragility comes from the same source: when even one person stops performing, when the greengrocer removes his sign, the illusion begins to crack.

Then came Carney’s pivot—the line that would define his entire address:

“Friends, it is time for companies and countries to take their signs down.”

The Fiction We Maintained

What sign had middle powers been displaying in their windows?

Carney was unflinching in his diagnosis:

“For decades, countries like Canada prospered under what we called the rules-based international order. We joined its institutions. We praised its principles. We benefited from its predictability. Because of that, we could pursue values-based foreign policies under its protection.”

But here’s what middle powers always knew:

“We knew the story of the international rules-based order was partially false. That the strongest would exempt themselves when convenient. That trade rules were enforced asymmetrically. And we knew that international law applied with varying rigour, depending on the identity of the accused or the victim.”

So what did they do?

“This fiction was useful, and American hegemony, in particular, helped provide public goods: open sea lanes, a stable financial system, collective security and support for frameworks for resolving disputes. So we placed the sign in the window. We participated in the rituals and we largely avoided calling out the gaps between rhetoric and reality.”

The Havel metaphor is perfect. Countries weren’t duped—they knew the rules-based order was selective, that the powerful exempted themselves. But the fiction provided enough stability, enough predictability, enough actual public goods that maintaining the pretense was worthwhile.

Like the greengrocer, they didn’t believe the sign. But they displayed it anyway because the system, for all its flaws, was preferable to the alternatives.

Then came the pivot:

“This bargain no longer works.”

The Rupture

“Let me be direct,” Carney declared. “We are in the midst of a rupture, not a transition.”

He identified the progression:

“Over the past two decades, a series of crises in finance, health, energy and geopolitics have laid bare the risks of extreme global integration. But more recently, great powers have begun using economic integration as weapons, tariffs as leverage, financial infrastructure as coercion, supply chains as vulnerabilities to be exploited.”

Then came the line that directly indicts the Trump approach without naming him:

“You cannot live within the lie of mutual benefit through integration when integration becomes the source of your subordination.”

This is the diagnostic statement that explains everything we’re witnessing. The fiction was that economic integration created mutual benefit—that trade made everyone prosperous, that interconnection prevented conflict.

But when great powers weaponize that integration—when they use tariffs to extort territorial concessions, when they threaten wine industries to force submission to vanity “peace boards,” when they demand “complete and total control” as the price of alliance membership—the mutual benefit becomes one-sided subordination.

You can’t maintain the greengrocer’s sign when the system has stopped even pretending to serve any purpose beyond naked coercion.

As Carney put it:

“The multilateral institutions on which the middle powers have relied—the WTO, the UN, COP, the architecture, the very architecture of collective problem solving—are under threat.”

The Cost of Building Fortresses

Carney warned against the natural response to this rupture:

“Many countries are drawing the same conclusions: that they must develop greater strategic autonomy in energy, food, critical minerals, in finance and supply chains. This impulse is understandable. A country that can’t feed itself, fuel itself, or defend itself has few options when the rules no longer protect you. You must protect yourself.”

But the consequence is grim:

“Let’s be clear about where this leads. A world of fortresses will be poorer, more fragile, and less sustainable.”

And there’s a deeper truth about what happens when hegemons abandon even the pretense of rules:

“If great powers abandon even the pretence of rules and values for the unhindered pursuit of their power and interest, the gains from transactionalism will become harder to replicate. Hegemons cannot continually monetize their relationships. Allies will diversify to hedge against uncertainty, buy insurance, increase options in order to rebuild sovereignty—sovereignty that was once grounded in rules but will be increasingly anchored in the ability to withstand pressure.”

This is risk management. And risk management comes at a price.

But here’s Carney’s key insight: “The cost of strategic autonomy and sovereignty can be shared.”

Collectively, investments in resilience are cheaper than everyone building their own fortresses. Shared standards reduce fragmentation. Complementarities create positive-sum outcomes.

The question isn’t whether to adapt to the new reality—middle powers must. The question is whether they adapt by simply building higher walls, or whether they can do something more ambitious.

Values-Based Realism

Carney outlined Canada’s response, which he called “values-based realism”—borrowing the phrase from Finnish President Alexander Stubb. The approach is both “principled and pragmatic.”

The result: “We actively take on the world as it is, not wait around for a world we wish to be.”

Carney detailed concrete actions:

• Removing all federal barriers to interprovincial trade

• Fast-tracking a trillion dollars of investment in energy, AI, critical minerals

• Doubling defense spending by decade’s end

• Signing 12 trade and security deals on four continents in six months

• Concluding strategic partnerships with China and Qatar just in the past few days

This wasn’t abstract philosophy. This was a middle power systematically reducing its vulnerability to coercion by diversifying relationships and building domestic strength.

Variable Geometry: The Alternative to the Board

Then came a concept that represents the practical alternative to the collapsing rules-based order—and to Trump’s performative “Board of Peace.”

Carney called it “variable geometry.”

Different coalitions for different issues based on common values and interests.

On Ukraine: Canada is “a core member of the coalition of the willing” and one of the largest per capita contributors to its defense.

On Arctic sovereignty: “We stand firmly with Greenland and Denmark and fully support their unique right to determine Greenland’s future.” Canada is investing in submarines, aircraft, and boots on the ground. And critically: “Canada strongly opposes tariffs over Greenland.”

On plurilateral trade: Building a bridge between the Trans-Pacific Partnership and the European Union to create a trading block of 1.5 billion people.

On critical minerals: Forming buyers’ clubs to diversify away from concentrated supply.

This is the alternative to Trump’s Board of Peace—actual coalitions built on actual shared interests, not performative structures designed to showcase a chairman’s dominance.

Variable geometry isn’t naive multilateralism. It isn’t relying on diminished institutions. It’s building coalitions that work, issue by issue, with partners who share enough common ground to act together.

The Performance of Sovereignty

Carney’s most devastating line came when he addressed the core delusion that bilateral negotiations with a hegemon can preserve sovereignty:

“Great powers can afford for now to go it alone. They have the market size, the military capacity and the leverage to dictate terms. Middle powers do not. But when we only negotiate bilaterally with a hegemon, we negotiate from weakness. We accept what’s offered. We compete with each other to be the most accommodating. This is not sovereignty. “Middle powers must act together because if we’re not at the table, we’re on the menu.”

The metaphor is perfect. Trump isn’t interested in sitting at the table for sustained diplomatic work—he’s bored of that. What he wants is to decide who’s on the menu, who gets devoured, who gets threatened into submission.

Carney was telling the assembled leaders: band together or be consumed one by one.

Living the Truth

Carney returned to his Havel framework to outline what it means for middle powers to “live the truth”:

First: “Stop invoking the rules-based international order as though it still functions as advertised. Call it what it is: a system of intensifying great-power rivalry where the most powerful pursue their interests using economic integration as coercion.”

Second: “Act consistently, applying the same standards to allies and rivals. When middle powers criticize economic intimidation from one direction but stay silent when it comes from another, we are keeping the sign in the window.”

Third: “Build what we claim to believe in rather than waiting for the old order to be restored. Create institutions and agreements that function as described.”

Fourth: “Reduce the leverage that enables coercion. Building a strong domestic economy should be every government’s immediate priority. Diversification internationally is not just economic prudence—it’s the material foundation for honest foreign policy. Because countries earn the right to principled stances by reducing their vulnerability to retaliation.”

We Are Taking Down the Sign

Carney closed with a declaration that directly contradicts the nostalgia Trump traffics in:

“We know the old order is not coming back. We shouldn’t mourn it. Nostalgia is not a strategy. But we believe that from the fracture, we can build something bigger, better, stronger, more just.”

And then the final return to Havel’s greengrocer:

“We are taking the sign out of the window.”

No more pretending. No more participating in rituals everyone knows are false. No more maintaining fictions that no longer serve their purpose.

The Carney Doctrine

Jeremy Kinsman, former Canadian ambassador to Russia, the UK, Italy and the EU, called it “the most consequential speech on global affairs I have ever heard from a Canadian PM.”

Colin Robertson of the Canadian Global Affairs Institute described it as “the Carney doctrine”—a framework other middle powers will likely adopt.

This wasn’t diplomacy. This was a philosophical and strategic break with seven decades of how middle powers navigated great power politics.

The speech had everything:

• Strategic clarity (variable geometry)

• Moral authority (living the truth)

• Practical implementation (the Canadian pivot)

• A memorable metaphor (the greengrocer’s sign)

He calls it the “Board of Peace” - a grand-sounding body that he intends to chair, overseeing conflicts from Gaza to God knows where else. But the homophone reveals a deeper truth: Trump isn’t interested in creating a board of peace. He’s simply bored of peace.

The difference matters enormously.

The Text Message That Said It All

On Sunday, January 18, 2026, Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre sent what should have been a routine diplomatic message to President Trump. It’s worth reading in full:

Dear Mr President, dear Donald – on the contact across the Atlantic – on Greenland, Gaza, Ukraine – and your tariff announcement yesterday. You know our position on these issues. But we believe we all should work to take this down and de-escalate – so much is happening around us where we need to stand together. We are proposing a call with you later today – with both of us or separately – give us a hint of what you prefer! Best – Alex and Jonas

This was diplomatic outreach at its most professional. Støre (writing with Finnish President Alexander Stubb) acknowledged disagreements, proposed de-escalation, and offered dialogue. The tone was respectful, the approach constructive. They even gave Trump options to save face - talk to both or separately, whatever he prefers.

Trump’s response, sent 27 minutes later and later forwarded to multiple European ambassadors, revealed everything about how he views peace, alliances, and international relations:

Read that again. The President of the United States, in response to a diplomatic request for de-escalation, explicitly stated that because he didn’t receive the Nobel Peace Prize, he no longer feels obligated to “think purely of Peace.”

The contrast between these messages is stunning:

Støre offers: Dialogue, de-escalation, standing together
Trump responds with: Grievance, territorial demands, threat

Støre acknowledges: Differences exist, but cooperation is essential
Trump declares: I deserve a prize, so I’ll take what I want

This wasn’t a diplomatic cable crafted by careful advisors. This was pure Trump - petulant, transactional, and utterly revealing. He views peace not as an end in itself, but as a means to an end: validation, acclaim, and most of all, a trophy for his case.

When the trophy didn’t arrive, he lost interest in the pursuit. Worse, he explicitly states he can now pursue “what is good and proper for the United States of America” - as if the pursuit of peace and the pursuit of American interests are incompatible, as if one requires abandoning the other.

The message also reveals Trump’s complete misunderstanding of how the Nobel Peace Prize works. As Støre later explained publicly: “As regards the Nobel Peace Prize, I have clearly explained, including to President Trump what is well known, the prize is awarded by an independent Nobel Committee and not the Norwegian Government.”

But in Trump’s transactional worldview, everything is hierarchical. Someone must control the committee. That someone must be Norway. Therefore Norway snubbed him. And that snub justifies... complete and total control of Greenland.

The logic is as absurd as it is dangerous.

The Board Nobody Wants to Join

Two days before that text message, on Friday, January 16, Trump announced his “Board of Peace.” According to the charter his administration circulated to potential members, this body would be “chaired by President Donald J. Trump” and would oversee not just the Gaza ceasefire but potentially a “range of global conflicts.”

The invitation list was telling: close American allies like Canada, Britain, France, and Saudi Arabia, mixed bizarrely with countries like Russia and Belarus - nations the U.S. has sanctioned and opposed.

The response has been equally telling. So far, only two leaders have agreed to join: Argentine President Javier Milei and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. What do they have in common? Both are autocrats who admire Trump’s strongman posturing. Democratic allies have demurred or outright refused.

France, in particular, raised concerns that the Board’s charter “raised serious questions about respecting the role of the United Nations.” Translation: this looks like an attempt to create a parallel international structure where Trump sits as global arbiter, bypassing institutions he can’t personally dominate.

The Extortion Begins

Trump’s response to France’s refusal demonstrates exactly why democratic allies are wary. On Monday, January 20, he threatened to impose 200% tariffs on French wine - including Champagne - if President Emmanuel Macron declined to join the Board of Peace.

Think about the audacity of that threat. France is America’s oldest ally, dating to 1778. French Champagne producers count the United States as their largest foreign market. And Trump threatened to destroy that market because Macron won’t join his vanity board.

France’s Agriculture Minister Annie Genevard called it what it was: “blackmail.” She told French television, “It’s shocking because it’s brutal, it’s done to force compliance.”

This came just two days after Trump threatened eight European NATO allies - Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Finland, and the United Kingdom - with 10% tariffs (rising to 25%) unless Denmark agreed to sell Greenland to the United States.

In less than a week, Trump weaponized trade policy against America’s closest allies three times:

The “Board of Peace” is the latest iteration of a familiar Trump pattern: create the appearance of grand strategy while avoiding the tedious work of actual implementation.

Consider his Gaza “peace plan,” announced with great fanfare on September 29, 2025. The 20-point “Comprehensive Plan to End the Gaza Conflict” called for:

• Immediate ceasefire

• Return of all hostages

• Demilitarization of Gaza

• International Stabilization Force deployment

• Technocratic Palestinian governance

• Large-scale reconstruction

• Conditional pathway to Palestinian statehood

It sounded comprehensive. It earned endorsements from countries around the world. The ceasefire went into effect on October 10, 2025.

But by January 2026 - just three months later - the reality on the ground told a different story:

• Israel had violated the ceasefire 1,193 times

• 442 Palestinians killed during the “ceasefire”

• Only 43% of promised humanitarian aid trucks actually entered Gaza

• Most provisions of the plan never materialized

• The Rafah crossing remains closed by Israel

• The International Stabilization Force hasn’t deployed

• The technocratic government hasn’t formed

What did materialize was the announcement of the “Board of Peace” - yet another structure, yet another grand pronouncement, yet another opportunity for Trump to position himself at the center of global affairs.

The Real Estate Developer’s Approach to Peace

Trump’s earlier vision for Gaza was even more revealing. On February 4, 2025 - before the “sober” 20-point plan - Trump held a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and announced that the United States would “take over” and “own” the Gaza Strip, clearing the rubble and reconstructing it as the “Riviera of the Middle East.”

He later shared an AI-generated video on social media depicting “Trump Gaza” as a luxury resort, complete with Trump and Netanyahu sunbathing shirtless on beach chairs, belly dancers, and a golden statue of Trump. The video showed a figure resembling Elon Musk being showered with banknotes.

This is what excites Trump: the dramatic gesture, the real estate deal, the transformative vision that bears his name. What bores him is everything that comes after the announcement:

• Patient negotiation with Hamas on disarmament timelines

• Coordination with Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey on security arrangements

• Building consensus among Palestinian factions

• Managing the complexities of reconstruction without displacement

• Navigating the UN system and international law

These tasks require sustained attention, deferred gratification, respect for others’ agency, and comfort with complexity - qualities Trump fundamentally lacks.

So instead, he creates a Board. He positions himself as chairman. He sends threatening letters to allies who won’t join. And when the actual work proves tedious, he moves on to the next dramatic gesture: threatening to annex Greenland, imposing tariffs on NATO allies, accepting Nobel medals that can’t legally be transferred.

The Trophy Case Approach to Foreign Policy

Trump’s obsession with the Nobel Peace Prize reveals everything about his approach to international relations. He doesn’t want to achieve peace; he wants to be recognized for achieving peace. The distinction is crucial.

When Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado won the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, she presented her medal to Trump during a White House visit. Trump said he planned to keep it - despite the Nobel Committee’s clear statement that prizes cannot be revoked, transferred, or shared with others.

He wants the trophy, not the achievement. The medal in the case, not the peace on the ground.

This explains the “Board of Peace” perfectly. It’s another trophy - a formal structure where Trump’s name appears first, where he wields the chairman’s gavel, where he can point to his “leadership” on global conflicts without doing the actual work of conflict resolution.

When Norway’s PM tried to explain that the Norwegian government doesn’t control the Nobel Committee - that it’s an independent body - Trump dismissed the explanation entirely. In a phone interview with NBC News, he insisted: “Norway totally controls it despite what they say.”

In Trump’s worldview, everything is transactional and hierarchical. The Nobel Committee must answer to someone. That someone must be Norway. Therefore, Norway chose to snub him. And that snub justifies his pivot from “thinking purely of Peace” to thinking about “what is good and proper for the United States of America” - which apparently means threatening to annex Greenland and impose punitive tariffs on allies.

The Macron Humiliation

The French wine tariff threat revealed another Trump pattern: the public humiliation of leaders who engage with him in good faith.

On Tuesday, January 21, Trump shared on Truth Social a screenshot of a private message he’d received from President Macron. In the message, Macron offered to organize a G7 meeting on Thursday afternoon after the World Economic Forum in Davos. He also offered to have dinner with Trump, noted that they were aligned on Syria, and expressed confusion about the U.S. position on Greenland.

Macron’s office confirmed the message was authentic.

This was diplomatic outreach - Macron trying to de-escalate tensions, find common ground, and create space for dialogue. Trump’s response was to publicly post the private communication and threaten France’s signature export industry with 200% tariffs.

This is not the behavior of someone interested in partnership, alliance, or multilateral cooperation. This is the behavior of someone who views every interaction as a dominance display, every overture as weakness to be exploited, every relationship as transactional.

It’s also the behavior of someone fundamentally bored with the actual work of diplomacy.

Why Only Autocrats Join

The composition of Trump’s “Board of Peace” tells its own story. The only leaders who’ve agreed to join are Javier Milei of Argentina and Viktor Orbán of Hungary - both of whom admire Trump’s strongman approach and govern in increasingly authoritarian fashion.

Democratic allies have refused or raised serious concerns. They understand that the Board isn’t about collective problem-solving or multilateral cooperation. It’s about creating a parallel structure where Trump can claim global leadership without the constraints of existing international institutions.

The United Nations, for all its flaws, operates on principles of sovereign equality, multilateralism, and international law. It moves slowly precisely because it must build consensus among diverse nations with competing interests.

Trump finds this intolerable. He wants speed, control, and deference. The “Board of Peace” offers all three - at least in theory. In practice, it offers none, because no serious democratic nation will subordinate its foreign policy to a board chaired by Donald Trump.

The Champagne Producers’ Dilemma

There’s a grim irony in threatening French Champagne with 200% tariffs in the name of peace. Champagne is what we toast with at celebrations, at peace accords, at moments of reconciliation. It’s literally the beverage of celebration.

Trump would impose punitive tariffs on Champagne because France won’t join his Board of Peace.

The Champagne producers of France have the United States as their largest foreign market. Trump threatened them once before, in March 2025, with the same 200% tariff. He backed down that time, but the threat alone rattled the industry.

Now it returns - not over trade imbalances or economic disputes, but over France’s refusal to join a vanity board that undermines the UN. The producers are hostages in a geopolitical game they never asked to play, their livelihood threatened because their president believes in multilateralism.

This is what happens when foreign policy becomes purely transactional, when alliances become protection rackets, when every interaction reduces to leverage and threats.

The Greenland Crisis as Context

The Board of Peace threats cannot be separated from Trump’s simultaneous campaign to acquire Greenland. Since returning to office in January 2025, Trump has:

• Refused to rule out military force to annex Greenland

• Demanded Denmark sell the territory

• Threatened 10% tariffs (rising to 25%) on eight European NATO allies

• Linked his Greenland demands to the Nobel Prize snub

• Triggered what’s been called “the greatest transatlantic crisis in generations”

On January 20, 2026 - the anniversary of his second inauguration - Trump posted an image from the Oval Office showing himself presenting a map of Greenland covered entirely in the American flag. The image wasn’t metaphorical or aspirational. It was presented as fact: Greenland as American territory, displayed on an easel in the seat of American power, with Trump gesturing to it like a real estate developer showing off a new acquisition.

This morning, the official White House account escalated further, reposting an even more explicit image at 8:30 AM: a photoshopped picture of Trump planting the American flag in Greenland’s tundra, flanked by what appear to be Vice President Vance and Secretary of State Rubio, with a sign reading “GREENLAND - US TERRITORY EST. 2026.”

This wasn’t satire from critics or a rogue social media manager. This was the official White House account posting imperial conquest propaganda. The imagery deliberately evokes Iwo Jima, the moon landing, Manifest Destiny - iconic moments of American triumph and territorial expansion. Except this time, the “territory” is a NATO ally’s sovereign land, home to 57,000 people who have repeatedly said they are not for sale.

The casual imperialism is breathtaking. This is how autocrats announce territorial conquest - not through diplomatic channels or international law, but through visual declarations of ownership. Putin displayed similar maps of annexed Ukrainian territory. Trump is doing the same with Greenland, posting these images on social media like trophy shots - and having the White House amplify them as official policy.

By his own logic, the claim is absurd. Just days earlier, Trump had dismissed Denmark’s sovereignty over Greenland by saying “Because a boat went there 500 years ago and then left, that doesn’t give you title to property.”

Yet by this standard, the Pilgrims who landed at Plymouth Rock in 1620 - just a boat that went there - gave the United States no legitimate claim to America. The Norse settled Greenland in 986 CE, over 1,000 years ago. The Inuit have lived there since the 13th century. But apparently “Complete and Total Control” requires neither historical continuity nor indigenous consent - only American desire and a map with the right flag colors.

Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen has been unequivocal: “If we have to choose between the United States and Denmark here and now, we choose Denmark.”

Thousands have protested in Greenland under the slogan “Greenland is not for sale.” Thousands more have marched in Denmark in “Hands off Greenland” protests.

The Danish Defence Intelligence Service, in its 2025 threat assessment, mentioned the United States as a threat to national security for the first time in its history - alongside Russia and China.

This is the context in which Trump announces his “Board of Peace.” He’s simultaneously threatening military action against a NATO ally’s territory while positioning himself as global arbiter of conflicts. He’s imposing tariffs on countries that refuse to sell him territory while claiming to lead peace initiatives.

The Board and the threats are two sides of the same coin: Trump’s fundamental inability to distinguish between dominance and leadership, between coercion and diplomacy, between owning something and achieving something.

What Peace Actually Requires

Real peace - the kind that ends wars and prevents their recurrence - requires qualities Trump has never demonstrated:

Patience: Peace processes take years, sometimes decades. The Good Friday Agreement in Northern Ireland took years of painstaking negotiation. The Iran nuclear deal required sustained multilateral diplomacy. These can’t be rushed or abbreviated.

Humility: Peacemaking requires acknowledging that other parties have legitimate interests and grievances. It means accepting that you can’t simply impose your will, that compromise isn’t weakness, that listening matters as much as talking.

Institutional Respect: Lasting peace relies on frameworks bigger than individual leaders - the UN, NATO, the International Criminal Court, the Geneva Conventions. These institutions frustrate leaders who want quick results, but they provide the legitimacy and staying power that individual initiatives lack.

Sustained Attention: The Gaza peace plan’s failure illustrates this perfectly. Announcing the plan earned Trump international praise. Implementing it required daily attention to violations, aid delivery, force deployment, governance structures. Trump lost interest almost immediately.

Genuine Concern: Peace requires actually caring about the people affected by conflict - not as abstractions or photo opportunities, but as human beings whose lives hang in the balance. Trump’s vision of Gaza as the “Riviera of the Middle East” revealed his actual interest: real estate development, not human welfare.

These qualities don’t come naturally to Trump. They’re antithetical to his personality, his business background, and his political brand. He thrives on conflict, drama, and dominance displays. Peace requires their opposite.

The Pattern Beyond Peace

Trump’s approach to foreign policy isn’t an aberration - it’s entirely consistent with how he approaches everything else. The same impatience, the same contempt for institutions, the same preference for dramatic gestures over sustained work.

Consider what economists are saying about his first year back in office. Despite surface-level stability - low unemployment, strong consumer spending - Trump has launched “an all-out assault on many of the institutions and policy paradigms that have long been seen by leaders of both major political parties as the foundations of American economic strength.”

He’s undermined the Federal Reserve’s independence, fired the head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, cut funding to universities conducting cutting-edge research, intervened in private business deals, and threatened executives who don’t embrace his priorities. As UCLA economist Kimberly Clausing warns: “We’re weakening the special sauce that made America so great.”

Remarkably, this assessment is shared across the ideological spectrum. Vance Ginn, who served as Trump’s chief economist in his first term, now says: “On net, the policies have been negative for the economy.”

The damage won’t show up immediately. It will be “subtle,” economists warn, “showing up as a steady drip of slower growth and higher interest rates that are hard to detect in the moment.” Harvard economist Gregory Mankiw puts it bluntly: “We know from a lot of historical experience that the sort of things he’s doing are antithetical to prosperity in the long run.”

The same pattern applies to peace. Trump wants the Nobel Prize now, the territorial acquisition now, the “complete and total control” now. He has no patience for the institutions, norms, and sustained diplomatic work that actually create stability and prosperity over time.

He’s bored of the Federal Reserve’s patient management of monetary policy, just as he’s bored of NATO’s patient management of collective security. He’s contemptuous of universities’ long-term research, just as he’s contemptuous of the UN’s long-term conflict resolution. He threatens corporate executives who won’t comply, just as he threatens allied leaders who won’t join his Board of Peace.

In economics as in foreign policy, Trump treats complex systems as if they’re real estate deals - something to dominate, not manage; to own, not steward; to exploit for short-term wins regardless of long-term costs.

As Clausing warns about the economy, the same applies to peace: “The long run takes a long time to arrive, and when it comes it comes with astonishing swiftness. I don’t know when the chickens come home to roost, but they will.”

The Bored Chairman

So we arrive at the central irony: Trump creates a Board of Peace precisely because he’s bored of peace.

The Board gives him:

• A title (Chairman)

• A structure (formal, hierarchical)

• A stage (global conflicts)

• A trophy case (another achievement to claim)

What it doesn’t give him:

• The tedious work of implementation

• The frustration of multilateral compromise

• The patience required for sustained diplomacy

• The humility to work within existing institutions

• The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize

The Board is the substitute for the substance. It’s the announcement instead of the achievement, the press conference instead of the peace accord, the chairman’s gavel instead of the negotiator’s patience.

It’s what happens when someone who craves recognition for peacemaking lacks any interest in the actual work of making peace.

The Inevitable Collapse

The Board of Peace is already failing before it’s properly begun. Democratic allies refuse to join. Those who do join (Milei, Orbán) delegitimize it rather than strengthen it. The threats Trump wields to force compliance - tariffs, economic warfare, public humiliation - make participation toxic for any leader answerable to democratic constituencies.

Meanwhile, the Gaza ceasefire the Board was supposedly created to oversee continues to collapse:

• Daily violations

• Continued Palestinian deaths

• Aid blocked

• Reconstruction stalled

• International force undeployed

The Board can’t fix this because the Board was never designed to fix anything. It was designed to give Trump a title and a talking point. It was designed by someone bored of the actual work of peace, looking for a shortcut to the recognition.

The Pattern Forward

We can expect more of this. More grand announcements. More structures with Trump’s name attached. More threats against allies who won’t comply. More public humiliations of leaders who engage in good faith.

And underlying it all: a fundamental boredom with the patient, unglamorous work of actually solving problems.

Trump wants the Nobel Peace Prize medal sitting in a display case. He doesn’t want the years of careful diplomacy that might earn it legitimately.

He wants to be chairman of a Board of Peace. He doesn’t want to do the work of making peace.

He wants “complete and total control” of Greenland. He doesn’t want to respect Danish sovereignty or Greenlandic self-determination.

He wants Gaza rebuilt as “Trump Riviera.” He doesn’t want to grapple with the displacement of two million Palestinians or the complexity of post-conflict reconstruction.

He wants the trophy, the title, the territory, the transformation - all the tangible symbols of achievement. He’s utterly bored by the process required to achieve them legitimately.

Davos: The Reckoning Arrives This Week

As this essay posts, world leaders are gathering at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The annual gathering usually focuses on economics and “stakeholder capitalism,” but this year it’s overshadowed by the transatlantic crisis Trump has manufactured.

Denmark’s government announced it will not attend - a remarkable snub given the forum’s importance for Danish business and diplomatic interests. They’re staying home because showing up would mean either capitulating to Trump’s Greenland demands or enduring further public humiliation.

The European Union has called an “extraordinary meeting” for Thursday - all 27 member states - to coordinate their response to Trump’s tariff threats and territorial demands. European Council President Antonio Costa is scrambling to present a unified front.

Trump posted on Truth Social Tuesday that he’d spoken with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and “agreed to a meeting of the various parties in Davos.” But what does “various parties” mean when:

• Only autocrats have joined his Board of Peace

• Democratic allies face 200% tariff threats

• France refuses to participate and gets wine sanctions

• Eight NATO countries are being economically blackmailed over Greenland

Macron tried to arrange a G7 meeting for Thursday afternoon after the forum. He offered dinner with Trump. He noted alignment on Syria, though he admitted: “I do not understand what you are doing on Greenland.” Trump’s response was to publicly post the private message and threaten Champagne producers with 200% tariffs, dismissing Macron as irrelevant because he’d be “out of office in a few months.”

Trump also posted a flattering message from NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who wrote “I will use my media engagements in Davos to highlight your work.” The pattern is clear: European leaders heap praise on Trump hoping to keep him engaged; Trump publicly posts their flattery while simultaneously mocking them as weak.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, already in Davos, captured the administration’s contempt perfectly when asked about European efforts to block the Greenland seizure: “I imagine they will form the dreaded European working group,” he sneered, calling it their “most forceful weapon.”

Even European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen acknowledged in her Davos speech Tuesday that the old transatlantic relationship is dead: “Nostalgia will not bring back the old order,” she said. “If this change is permanent, then Europe must change permanently too.”

California Governor Gavin Newsom was more blunt, calling global leaders “pathetic” for failing to stand up to Trump: “I should have brought a bunch of kneepads for all the world leaders. This is pathetic—the Nobel Prizes that are being given away. It’s just pathetic.”

He’s right. Europe is trying to accommodate Trump even as he mocks them, worried he’ll pull support from NATO or Ukraine. They’re proving his assessment correct: they recognize only strength, and they’re showing none.

The Davos meetings this week will test whether European solidarity holds or fractures. Will France maintain its refusal to join the Board? Will Germany and the UK stand firm? Or will the tariff threats work, peeling off countries one by one until Trump can claim a “win”?

More fundamentally: Can NATO survive a U.S. president who views alliances as protection rackets and treats allied territory as real estate to acquire?

The world is about to find out. This week. In Switzerland. While Trump chairs a Board of Peace that no democracy will join and threatens the economic livelihoods of allies who won’t comply.

The Cost of Boredom

Trump’s boredom with peace carries enormous costs:

• NATO’s worst crisis in its 77-year history

• U.S.-EU trade war looming

• Democratic allies losing faith in American leadership

• Autocrats emboldened by the chaos

• The Gaza ceasefire collapsing

• International institutions undermined

• The very concept of rules-based international order in question

All because a president who claims to want peace finds the actual work of peace intolerably boring.

The Board of Peace won’t solve conflicts. It will create new ones. The tariff threats won’t build alliances. They’ll destroy them. The Nobel Prize obsession won’t bring recognition. It will bring ridicule.

But Trump will continue this pattern because the alternative - sustained, patient, humble diplomatic work - is simply too boring for him to contemplate.

The Wordplay as Warning

Sometimes a pun reveals a profound truth. The homophone of Board and Bored isn’t just clever wordplay - it’s diagnostic. It identifies the core problem with Trump’s entire approach to foreign policy.

He creates boards and structures and grand initiatives because he’s fundamentally bored by the substance of what those structures supposedly exist to achieve.

He announces peace plans because he’s bored of the actual peacemaking.

He threatens allies because he’s bored of alliance maintenance.

He demands territorial acquisition because he’s bored of the patient diplomacy that builds genuine security.

He wants the trophy case full, the titles accumulated, the grand gestures made - and then he wants to move on to the next dramatic announcement, the next threat, the next display of dominance.

The Board of Peace is just the latest bottle in the wine cellar - another vintage to be leveraged, threatened, or withheld at will. Just another structure created by someone profoundly bored with the substance those structures are meant to contain.

And the world pays the price for his boredom.

The “Board of Peace” was announced on January 16, 2026. As of January 21, 2026, only two autocratic leaders have agreed to join. France has refused and been threatened with 200% tariffs on wine. Eight NATO allies face tariffs over Greenland. The Gaza ceasefire continues to collapse. Trump’s text to Norway’s PM confirming he no longer feels obligated to “think purely of Peace” has been authenticated by multiple European governments. The Nobel Peace Prize cannot be transferred, yet Trump claims he’s keeping María Corina Machado’s medal.

Denmark has pulled out of Davos. The EU has called an extraordinary summit for Thursday. NATO faces its greatest crisis in 77 years. And somewhere in France, Champagne producers watch their largest export market being weaponized in a geopolitical game they never asked to play.

When the chairman is bored of peace, the board becomes just another instrument of coercion.

But while Trump was posting AI-generated conquest fantasies and threatening wine tariffs, the serious world was gathering in Davos. And they had something to say about a president who mistakes performance for statecraft, boards for substance, and boredom for strategy.

The pun becomes prophecy. And the rupture begins.
